Letter from the Staff
Welcome to our July Newsletter!
We hope you had a great Fourth of July celebration!
In his lecture, entitled the History of Astrology, Steve Judd, one of our recommended astrologers, leads us on a highlight tour of the role of astrology through ages and civilizations. His talk gives us a real sense for the scope and breadth of the discipline and rather than being a dry, historical overview, it is filled with humor and little known short tales. One of the more fascinating things we learn is that astrology was, at one time, required study for certain professions and in the healing sciences.
Astrology requires extensive use of mathematics to calculate degrees, angles and orbs. Computers do an excellent job of helping us with those calculations, but what computers don’t do well is combine and evaluate the soup of all the various ingredients and evolving transits that makeup an individual’s chart. This is where a skilled astrologer is essential. Astrology has a variety of uses including providing medical insights and career guidance. Everything begins by calculating a person’s natal chart which requires the birth place, date and exact time of birth. Astrologers consider the natal chart the snapshot of what the person has to work with during his life.
A consultant friend of mine from India once told me an amusing story about their family’s Vedic astrologer. He said that when his youngest brother was born, his dad asked the nurse for the birth time and hurried down to see their astrologer so that the baby’s chart could be calculated. As the astrologer worked, he kept frowning and shaking his head. Finally, he came over to the father and said, “Are you sure you have this information correct?” The father said yes, he had written it as the nurse told him. The astrologer said, “Well, according to this, your child should be a girl not a boy.”
Baffled, the father went back to the hospital to check that time again. It turns out he had accidentally transposed a couple of the numbers and the birth time was incorrect! Everyone in the family got a good laugh and a reminder that there was much more to this than meets the eye.
