Storks

by Betty Lipton

Storks The storks line up
near the airport
as if waiting for
their flight home.
Patiently watching planes.
Not like the herons
wanting their breakfast.
Do their eyes notice
the small changes.
Green sprigs appear
around dead leaves,
not pretty like fall.
Instead cardinals
dot the trees.
Azalea buds struggle.
Soon the storks
will fly home.
The summer warmth
will make flowers
and people wilt,
longing for winter.
