Spotlight: Lauri Pointer

Lauri Pointer In 1988 Lauri Pointer received a B.S. from Colorado State University in Exercise and Sports, with an emphasis in Wellness Management. She also worked as a personal trainer and wellness counselor for ten years, but felt she was missing something.

“I felt like I was dealing with just the physical body,” she says, and that she felt there was deeper work to be done, but she didn’t know where to start.

The turning point came when she explored her own questions about what she wanted with her life. She practiced guided visualization and meditation, as well as read the works of Deepak Chopra which had a meaningful effect on how she thought about her path in life. “It really made me ask, what are my gifts? How could I serve humanity with them?” Regularly meditating on these questions, Lauri said one day, the answer simply came to her. “It was just as if someone had whispered in my ear, the words ‘therapeutic touch.’” It was the beginning of something new for her.

Although she’d never even heard of those words before or knew what they were, Lauri went straight to the library and found what this answer meant. During her research of therapeutic touch, which is another form of energy healing, Lauri happened upon resources about Healing Touch. This included information about current classes in the practice, and the rest, as they say, is history.

After completing 5 Levels of Healing Touch classes, Lauri began her own private Healing Touch practice in 1997, and became teaching certified in 1998 by the Healing Touch Program. Her work as a HT practitioner and instructor is busy but rewarding. Lauri spent the last year traveling and teaching Levels 1-3. She is also the instructor for The Healing Touch Presentation class, which instructs practitioners how to teach Introductory Healing Touch workshops in hospitals and schools, as well as how to personalize a class for a particular audience.

“The body is a phenomenal communicator when something’s off,” Lauri says. “Those symptoms mean something.” And it’s true – symptoms like a headache or a sleepless night are more than just irritations, they are signals of a larger issue. Commonly these issues become part of life’s normal routines, so much so that we don’t even notice them as problems. Eating poorly, not sleeping enough, or being too busy and stressed all take a toll on the body and its energy.

According to Lauri, Healing Touch works with the body’s energy system, which consists of the biofield, the chakras, and the meridians. This biofield surrounds and penetrates the physical body. While most people can’t see this energetic field, it’s certainly there and we’re often aware of it in many ways – when we feel someone standing close or our personal bubble has been invaded, for instance. Other practices besides Healing Touch work with this energy. Acupuncture, for example, works with the meridians which are specific energy tracts throughout the body.

Lauri says that the experience of Healing Touch differs from person to person, depending on what their body needs. While much of Healing Touch’s effects are apparent in the physical body, emotional or spiritual healing can very well happen, too. Because the body, mind, and spirit are so closely connected, a healing in one area can lead to healing in another. As Lauri says, “If we work with one, the others will follow.”

No matter what the experience feels like, Healing Touch only provides positive benefits. This is because the body naturally takes what energy it needs, and where it needs it. When working with a client, the practitioner has them lie fully clothed on a massage table; the client simply relaxes as their body does the work of taking in or releasing energy, depending on what it needs. The practitioner uses their hands above the body or with a light touch gently helping balance the body’s energy system. The energy that flows through the client’s body is not that of the practitioner; rather, it is the universal energy. The results from a Healing Touch session ranges from pain relief or feeling less tired to having a clearer mind or an overall sense of peace.

As a Healing Touch practitioner, Lauri helps the flow of energy through the person’s body, and acts as a conduit for the process. Using an example of a broken bone, she explains the practitioner’s role in Healing Touch: a doctor sets the bone and prepares it so it can heal properly, but it is the bone itself that ultimately heals on its own. “The body is naturally, innately built to flow energy,” says Lauri. “We just have to get out of the way and let it do its job!”

Lauri describes the overall effect of Healing Touch as pushing a reset button for the body’s energy. It refreshes and energizes in addition to assisting in healing, and overall brings a sense of wholeness to the body. “Wholeness is the body’s most natural state,” says Lauri, “The body know how to get to that state.”

Currently about 40 hospitals nationwide have implemented HT Programs as a part of the services they offer to patients. “Integrative medicine is happening now!” she says. Adding that she hopes one day, the word integrative won’t be necessary in mainstream healthcare as more healthcare providers offer Healing Touch and other forms of complementary healing. Complementary is an important word with regard to Healing Touch. Lauri says it’s important to know that Healing Touch is a complementary therapy, not an alternative one. While it shouldn’t replace necessary medical care, it works extremely well alongside any traditional treatment or care a person is receiving. “It’s all about utilizing the best of both worlds!” says Lauri.

Healing Touch is also a great form of preventative care. “It keeps people well, and helps them heal sooner,” Lauri says. For instance, Healing Touch is effective in providing pain relief and reducing stress. It is also helpful to people dealing with the effects of chemotherapy, which can alter the body as much as any illness. Equally important is that it can simply make someone feel better. “It can instill that sense of hope,” she says which sometimes makes all the difference.

Besides being a practitioner, Healing Touch is a central part of Lauri’s personal life as well. “I love to receive Healing Touch!” she says with enthusiasm, adding that addressing self-care with Healing Touch is one of the first things taught in a Healing Touch class. She currently goes to a massage therapist who combines Healing Touch in each session.

“I just get this profound sense of rejuvenation,” she says. “There’s a mental shift that happens that puts everything into perspective.”

Lauri is spreading the knowledge of Healing Touch through her own practice and by continuously teaching classes in it. She is the lead instructor for Level 2 Healing Touch, as well as the Healing Touch Presentations class both for the Healing Touch Program. She recommends Levels 1 and 2 to anyone interested in living a healthier life, because the techniques that are taught can be used at home including helping back and neck problems; Healing Touch is not just for people wanting to start their own business. “Everyone has the ability to do this,” she says. “It’s for self care, family care … it can just mean less visits to the doctor.”

Lauri’s passion for helping others in their own healing extends beyond the power of touch. In addition to her work with Healing Touch, Lauri is an avid writer and knows very well the importance of journaling in the healing process. She began journaling as a student in junior high and has continued her love of writing ever since. In 2001 she became a Certified Instructor of Journal to the Self, a program developed by Kathleen Adams of the Center for Journal Therapy. She now teaches journaling classes in a method she developed herself called Soul Journaling.

Lauri has found that journaling is an extremely helpful tool for sorting out emotions and promoting personal healing. “I write a lot when I’m stressed; it helps me get to the core of why I’m stressed, and then I can address the problem,” she says. It’s also a great way to understand what you want out of life because, “it’s easier to manifest your desires when you know what you want.”

Much of her work with journaling is done through teaching classes in this craft as well. Currently she is an instructor at Front Range Community College in Colorado, teaching two classes including journaling as a tool for healing. She also offers Soul Journaling workshops and a mother-daughter journaling class this coming May.

For Lauri, her work with Healing Touch and journaling isn’t really work at all – it’s a way to do what she loves by being a part of the intimate healing process for so many people. “I love the life I have,” she says. “I’m not working, I’m playing!” She says that it’s about finding joy and doing what you love and Lauri’s goal is to help others find that opportunity within themselves. Teaching is a large part of that goal and helps Lauri realize her own passions as well: “Introducing others to the many holistic options available for enhancing our quality of life.”
